Laura Sviklane AwardMrs Laura Sviklane, PhD from Riga University gave a poster presentation about "validation of non-invasive assessment method of hepatic steatosis in type 1 diabetes mellitus patients in Latvia".

This exciting study was awarded with the best poster presentation award 2015.

Laura SviklaneAbout this study: "Techniques for assessing hepatic fat content are expensive and technically difficult. In order to facilitate hepatic steatosis diagnosis, specific markers have been developed– hepatic steatosis index (HSI), fatty liver index (FLI), which are based on biochemistry parameters in blood.
To validate hepatic steatosis markers FLI, HSI via MRI and to analyse their association with diabetes long-term complications, metabolic syndrome, HbA1c%.
FLI, HSI were validated by liver MRI in 19 type 1 diabetic patients from LatDiane study. Further, association of FLI and HSI indices with diabetic complications, metabolic syndrome, HbA1c% was analyzed in 143 patients with low-risk alcohol consumption and duration of diabetes more than five years. Results. In 19 diabetic patients, liver microscopic fat content detected by MRI correlated with FLI (p<0,01) and HSI (p<0,05). FLI marker could detect hepatic steatosis with efficiency of 81% (p=0,007) and HSI marker with a efficiency 69% (p=0,052). In 143 patients screened by FLI and HSI, increased risk for hepatic steatosis was observed in patients with metabolic syndrome, diabetic complications and longer diabetes duration.
Our results confirm the applicability of FLI in diagnosis of liver steatosis in type 1 diabetes patients, however, larger validation studies are needed."
